Genesis

Here, at the beginning.

So this blog is going to be a little bit different from most other “photography” blogs. I’m not interested in “reviewing” things, that is to say, I am not here to pass judgement on tools or products or techniques that feed into our never ending search for “that thing that will make my photography better.” I have fallen down the rabbit hole of cameras and lenses and film and technique and as much as it can be helpful and informative it is also overwhelming and never ending. For my own sanity, I have chosen to keep this blog separate from that.

Instead, this will be a much more inward look at how I want photography to change my life.

Now that sounds pretty dramatic, and I guess it’s supposed to, but what I mean by that is: I want to use photography as a framework to build a life outward, connect with nature, connect with people, see the world differently in large and small ways; but also as a way to turn the lens inward, see the things inside me that I love, the things I want to change, confront internal challenges and become the person I’ve always wanted to be.

So how do we do this? How do I write about photography and my personal struggles and somehow make it interesting enough that someone, anyone!, would want to read it? I have no idea. Well, maybe that’s not entirely true. I have a plan.

Philosophy. Using philosophical ideas as a framework in which to discuss both art and self, creation and struggle, photography and, well me.

In coming entries, there will be discussions (if I’m talking to myself does it still count as a discussion?) of many different philosophical concepts from different cultures around the world, how we can apply them to photography, how that can impact the way I and maybe you see the world. Some will be short and sweet, others long and in depth, but each lesson will be learned together, through the lens.

I hope this sounds as interesting to you as it does me. I hope you’ll get something out of my dives into the deep end of philosophy and photography and how the two can effect the photographer. I hope, selfishly, that I find purpose in this.
